DJs

DJ
Know1
Since
first touching down on WKSR (Kent State University) in 1996
as G-Squared, dj kNow1 (Greg Norman) has aspired to carry on
the legacy of Hip Hops greatest tastemakers and party-rockers.
This focus earned the young Dj the position of Urban Music Director
at KSR before graduating from Kent in 1999. G-Squared transitioned
quickly into work in radio promotions/production and a Friday
night club gig in Clevelands Flats as part of Attichead Productions,
a collective representing his hometown of Lakewood. Veteran
Dj Besto had taken the rookie on as an understudy and opener
at the weekly, sharing his vast knowledge of cutting, mixing
and song selection. G-Squared soon felt called to take on a
more meaningful Dj moniker, changing to dj kNow1 in 2000 as
a reference to his goals of maintaining humility while striving
to utilize his talent. Still rocking parties with Besto and
The Atticheads, kNow1 cut his teeth in the mix tape game with
a release in the spring of 2000. The Cypher was an unprecedented
concept: 90 minutes of instrumentals mixed and blended, ready
for freestyle and battle session use. The Cypher became kNow1s
calling card, having since distributed another five volumes
throughout the Midwest and beyond. kNow1 next relocated to Columbus
from 2001-2003, where regularly featured with The Fonosluts
Dj crew at the legendary Bernies on Sunday nights. Upon his
return to the 216, kNow1 reconnected with Attichead offshoot
Tydedown Entertainment, opening for the likes of KRS One, Ghostface
Killah, Prince Paul, Mr. Lif, Aesop Rock and Murs, while picking
up a new Friday night at The Bassa Vita Lounge on Clevelands
West Side. The rising Dj had also begun courting powerhouse
Nappyhead Entertainment, known for having the best and longest
running Hip Hop showcase in the city, Kings of the Iron Mic.
kNow1 scored as host Dj for the Kings fourth year anniversary
show in March of 2002. Paulie Rhyme (Finless Brown) also linked
with the bubbling Dj for a run of Thursday nights at The Rhythm
Room in Cleveland Heights, including a show featuring Camp Lo
and Tajai (Hieroglyphics). kNow1 was host Dj for the Kool Cigarettes
MC Battle Series, culminating in an opening set for a performance
by Grammy Award-Winners The Roots at The Agora Theater. To date,
the dj has also held down weekly engagements at The EAC (Kent),
Oldfields (Columbus), Za Za (Cleveland Heights), Platinum Dreams
(Cleveland Heights), Caseys (Lakewood) and Friday nights at
The Mirage (Flats). Having worked with several promoters and
production companies, kNow1 settled in with Nappyhead Entertainment
in late 2003. He has since contributed to numerous recorded
projects and spun at many shows as part of the still-rising
organization. With kNow1 headlining, Nappyhead took on their
first weekly club night at The B-Side Liquor Lounge (Coventry,
Cleveland Heights) in 2005. For 2006 and beyond, dj kNow1s goals
include: continuing to back Nappyhead super group The Go-Live
Grizzlies; a series of concept mix tapes; further work to serve
the entertainment needs of those raised on Hip Hop culture and
ultimately developing programming that utilizes music as a tool
to help adolescents express themselves, cope, and create positive
changes in their lives.

My
ultimate achievement would be to live from music and pass positivity
through it, hip hop is my format. I was raised as a fan of all
the forms of Hip Hop and Rock music since early childhood thanks
to older siblings and their friends. I began learning guitar,
drums, bass, and singing from my family and friends around 5
years of age. I grew up in Parma and North Olmsted, and have
lived around Cleveland, Columbus, and San Diego California ever
since. I don't pretend to be a gangsta-false flagger, but like
any human I'll protect myself. I am what I am, another child
of God and creator of music. I've been in different metal, hardcore,
and punk bands since my teenage years (L.I.G.H.T., Ambugala,
Little Neddy Goes To War). I sang for those bands throughout
10 years, and also combined playing bass with singing for Little
Neddy. BCSS, Yakuza, and Albino were other bands I played bass,
drums, guitar, and/or sang/screamed with. I began djing on the
side 8 years ago with motivations for battling and turntablism.
I began to focus completely on turntablism, djing, and producing
2 years ago when personal and musical differences with band
members abrupted while living in San Diego CA. I mixed with
KutFather, DJ HOP (Icons), NTec, Disco Rick (R.I.P.) & Mr. Henshaw
of the First Power Crew, Rob Revs, Phat Philly and many local
SD DJs in the scratch clinic at CSL record store. I moved back
to Ohio to get back into college. I DJed at various hip hop
events for Nappyhead Inc since 2002 like "Kings/Queens of the
Iron Mic" which is Cleveland's longest running hip hop event.
I've been in two guitar center battles 2005 receiving 2nd and
3rd place and a Kool Mix 2002 battle with 2nd place also in
Cleveland. I scratch with the "Go Live Grizzlies" produce original
beats combined with scratching (Turntablism), also I create
mix cd's.
